Intro to Taupo, New Zealand

Lake Taupo, made up of 619 square kilometers of fresh water, is the heart of the North Island, and New Zealand's largest lake. The lake is the main focus of the region, being one of the last true wild trout fisheries left in existence as well as providing the perfect venue for a number of water based activities.

A few thousand years ago the sun in China was blocked out by ash and debris from the volcanic eruption that created Lake Taupo, and today the region is dotted with volcanoes. Visitors to Taupo will find easy access to geothermal fields, steaming geysers and boiling mud pools by travelling a few minutes north to Wairakei.
